Douglas Ammerman, then 27, and James Michael Holwell, also known as Michael Houlihan, 23, simply stayed silent. Police took the men into custody on misdemeanor child abuse charges and placed the six youngsters in protective custody. A nationwide alert was issued to parents.

What began as a routine welfare check in a Florida park would explode into one of the most bizarre and enduring mysteries of the late 20th century, a case that touched on satanic panic, communal living experiments, and whispers of intelligence agency involvement that have never fully faded.

The official story, at least at first, painted the Finders as an eccentric but harmless Washington-based commune. The group, authorities said, followed the teachings of Chinese philosopher Lao Tse and lived simply, sharing resources and raising children collectively. The two men were merely transporting the kids on a camping trip. The children, though unkempt, showed no serious injuries. Within weeks, the charges against Ammerman and Holwell were dropped. The mothers arrived, reclaimed their offspring, and the matter appeared closed. Police in Tallahassee and Washington backed away from early descriptions of satanic rituals. No evidence of organized abuse or trafficking emerged, they insisted. The Finders were odd, yes, but not criminal. Case closed.

However, all was not quite as it appeared.

Raids on the group’s properties in Washington and rural Virginia uncovered far more disturbing material than anyone had anticipated. Photographs showed children participating in what appeared to be ceremonial acts, including the bloodletting of animals. One image depicted a child in chains.
